We have just published a new edition of “Autumn Daffodils – Joanna’s story”. When we re-looked at it, my immediate reaction was that it was a great story, but also how ( four novels later) it could be improved. The story is the same, but I have changed the entire essence of the book. Joanna is a wonderful character to work with; she is the archetypal female goddess who, for those of us who live on a more earthly plain, would only be seen on the front cover of Vogue magazine. This is what makes her so interesting because, behind those glamorous images, there is always a real person as vulnerable as the rest of us. In the first Daffodils book, “Charlie’s Story”, Joanna is that Vogue cover girl; she is the fairy-tale that Charlie falls for. She returns in “Joanna’s Story”, but this is no longer the glamourous cover girl; she is now thirty years older, a mother, and has the weight of the world pressing on her shoulders.
New Edition of “Autumn Daffodils – Joanna’s Story”
The first edition tells her story well, but it misses what lies behind that story. Her exploits are compelling, but when she tries to introduce Charlie and his friends to that world, she realises that beneath the bright lights, there is another world. Charlie and his friends have something she has missed all those years. She finally admits her life is incomplete. Joanna’s epiphany is best expressed with a memorable quote from my latest book “Parallel Lives.” Love is when you have to be together because being apart is to be incomplete. It is when the love you share offers everything you desire, but you only desire each other. It is when time stands still because you want it to last the rest of your life.
I hope the new edition captures the real Joanna. If you have read the first edition, I think you will enjoy the rewrite even more. The same might apply to “Charlie’s Story”. Over the coming weeks, we intend to review it again, and I suspect there will be another story behind each of Charlie’s friends, not to mention Charlie himself. We’ll make sure to keep you posted!
When did you rewrite Autumn Daffodils – Joanna’s story? Did it replace the original edition? I read the book in 2024.
